Corn maturity lags in weekly report

Cooler weather continued across most of the state last week in the weekly crop progress and weather report issued Tuesday.

 

There were 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 3. Statewide, the average temperature was 67.1 degrees, 5.4 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.37 inches, 0.40 inches below normal.

 

Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 14 percent very short, 37 percent short, and 49 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 11 percent very short, 37 percent short, and 52 percent adequate.

 

Corn in the dough stage was at 96 percent, compared to 97 percent last year. Corn dented was at 67 percent, compared to 78 percent for the 5-year average. Corn mature was at 13 percent, compared to 26 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.

 

Soybeans coloring was at 19 percent, compared to 24 percent for the 5-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves was at 3 percent, compared to 4 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

 

Pasture and range condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 44 percent fair, 29 percent good, and 3 percent excellent.
