Mixed results from tour so far

BLOOMINGTON – The Farm Journal Midwest Crop Tour stop in Bloomington Tuesday night revealed mixed results.

For corn in Indiana, the ear count was down 2.6 percent from last year with a yield estimate of 171.23, down 1.3 percent. Also, the number of soybean pods was down with soil moisture down 6.7 percent.

In Nebraska, corn ear count was up .3 percent with grain length 2.8 percent higher. The yield estimate was 165.42, up 4.3 percent from last year. Soybean pods were down with moisture up 18.2 percent. Those on the tour reported more moisture on the western side of the Midwest versus the east.

DuPont Pioneer field agronomist Dave Koehn noted quite a bit of variability at planting time in Illinois with some corn plants pollinating more ideally than others.

“We are tracking closer to that 175 bushels per acre mark (for Illinois),” Koehn said.
