Growers hard at it before rain

GRIDLEY – Prior to this week’s rain event, area growers have been working countless hours to put corn and soybeans in the ground.
“I would say this is probably the most beans I’ve seen in the ground by April 25 than I can ever remember,” said Bill Roth, manager of the Brandt Consolidated Gridley location.
Roth estimates two-thirds of the corn has been planted in his area of McLean County with around 15 percent of soybeans planted so far. Roth reminds farmers of the potential for yield advantages from planting soybeans early. It’s almost as if corn and beans should be planted at the same time. There is risk involved, but Roth believes the reward is far greater.
Folks at Brandt and other local ag retailers have been busy during the past two weeks spraying fields, among other things.
“As long as we can keep the equipment running, usually we can stay ahead of guys,” added Roth.
