View from the Cab: Enjoying What I Do

I know I have said it before, but I really do enjoy my job.
The old saying of enjoying what you do and never working a day in your life applies to me. I like being able to report on an industry which I am directly a part of and wouldn’t have it any other way.
One of the most exciting times of the farming season is knocking on the doorstep…planting. I can’t wait to get out there and plant this year’s corn and soybean crops while managing to snap a few photos of others doing the same. I am also planning some exciting promotions with The Central Illinois Farm Network this spring.
The fine folks at Dave’s Supermarket have teamed up with me to deliver Fried Chicken in the Field to local farmers. We look forward to delivering a free lunch to those who are the backbone of our rural economy. All you have to do to register is visit www.centralillinoisfarmnetwork.com and look for the “Chicken Giveaway” page on the top right.
Also, you will want to check out the website on Fridays for our “Farmer Friday” segment during April and May when we spotlight an area farmer with an online article, photo and interview. I will also be including sound clips on my radio programs. I spent the winter traveling around Livingston and McLean counties in search of some deserving farmers. Information on these promotions will also be shared via Facebook and Twitter so keep your eyes open.
Thanks to everyone for coming out to last week’s 2017 Central Illinois Farm Network Market Outlook Meeting in Fairbury, co-sponsored by Bank of Pontiac and Prairie Central Co-op. We once again had an informative program featuring Merrill Crowley, Wayne Nelson and Aaron Curtis. As always, Gig’s Place did a great job with the pizza buffet. We also had some great door prizes to hand out.
Now that the March 31 USDA reports are behind us, maybe the markets will stabilize a bit. We have seen some up and down patterns since winter and are hoping for a permanent “up” pattern. Many analysts are now looking ahead to what our weather will do this spring and what the June acreage report will tell us.
