View from the Cab: Celebrating Ag

(CIFN file photo)

Spring is here and we are approaching one of my favorite times of the year.

Nothing beats an early morning in late April or early May when hints of the sun are visible at 5 a.m. and the birds are singing loudly outside. Seeing sunlight so early in the morning gets me motivated for the day ahead, unlike those dark winter mornings where it is pitch black for hours.

I especially enjoy spring days because once I finish my early morning work inside, I venture outdoors for a day in the field planting corn and soybeans. With farming, we never know what one particular day may bring but that is the fun of it in my opinion. We will be out there turning dirt in no time as April rapidly approaches.

Did you celebrate National Ag Day last week? While eating lunch at a local restaurant the other day, it was neat to see a colorful agricultural placemat designed by area students. The National FFA organization was one of the many groups to celebrate the special day as they had 45 members from 30 states visit Washington D.C. to advocate for the industry. Also, over 80 organizations submitted letters to Congress highlighting the need to increase support of next generation farmers.

The National Ag Day initiative urges all Americans to understand how food, fiber and renewable resources are produced in this country and to acknowledge the role ag plays in providing a safe and abundant food supply. Last week was also National Ag Week when everyone comes together to celebrate the efforts of those involved in ag.

I spent Ag Week covering several meetings, which included the McLean County Chamber of Commerce Ag Awareness Breakfast in Bloomington and the Livingston County Farm Bureau’s Legislative Breakfast in Pontiac. It is always impressive to see the local support for such an important industry. Our family even had a chance to squeeze in a few fun things to do during spring break. Aside from appointments and eating out at a few restaurants, we picked out a new outdoor basketball hoop for the garage. Kasen is pumped!

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this week at the market meeting in Fairbury. Thanks again to the Bank of Pontiac and Prairie Central Co-op for co-sponsoring. Don’t forget the USDA Planting Intentions report comes out this Friday at 11 a.m.
