RUSHVILLE – A State Senator in the 47th district who is not seeking re-election won the Friend of Ag award from the various commodity groups in the state.

John Sullivan of Rushville has enjoyed working with the many farm organizations over the years and getting to know the members.

“To me, it means a lot that people are aware of what you’re doing and what you’re trying to do to help agriculture,” Sullivan told The Central Illinois Farm Network after receiving the honor.

Sullivan considers his time in the Illinois Senate a “great run” but he believes it is time to move on and let someone else take a shot at the office. Sullivan reflected on the tumultuous time in Springfield during the past several years.

“I was hoping that I would leave under better circumstances with regard to the budget and trying to get a solution to the situation,” he said. “Unfortunately, it seems like it takes a crisis before the General Assembly will move especially when we’re talking about a budget.”

The senator believes it will take spending cuts and additional revenue to make a budget deal work. When Sullivan was first elected, three senators who were farmers were leaving. He came into the Senate as the only farmer out of 59 senators. Sullivan has enjoyed his role representing ag at the state government level.

There won’t be any farmers left in the state Senate once Sullivan leaves. The job of trying to educate and communicate with legislators is going to be more important than it ever has been, according to Sullivan.
