Fertilizer activity continues

GRIDLEY – Field activities were moving along well up until this week’s rain showers.

Since another big crop was removed from the fields, crews from Brandt Consolidated have been busy applying fertilizer to replenish the soil, according to Bill Roth who manages the Brandt Gridley location. Roth says many growers are waiting to apply anhydrous ammonia but temperatures have been too warm.

“The ground temperatures just aren’t going to allow that right now,” Roth explained. “We’re trying to be good stewards and trying to do what the right thing is for everybody.”

Roth is hopeful for a downward trend in temperatures by the end of next week so anhydrous application can begin.

2016 was a good year for the crops – which has something to do with the weather and seed varieties farmers purchased. Just the seed genetics alone can greatly boost yields in good and bad years, according to Roth.

“It just keeps getting better.”

Brandt Consolidated continues placing seed orders for next year and growers will hopefully have plenty of weed control options in 2017.
